Description

Haryanvi Idioms and Proverbs is a comprehensive bilingual descriptive lexicon documenting the rich idiomatic, proverbial, and folk expression traditions of the Haryanvi language. Combining linguistic documentation with sociolinguistic, folkloristic, and lexicographical approaches, this work serves as both a scholarly reference and a practical guide to one of North India's most vibrant regional languages.
Far more than a simple collection of idioms and proverbs, this volume systematically documents Haryanvi idioms, proverbs, sayings, sarcastic expressions, humorous phrases, rebukes, folk utterances, traditional verbal expressions, and other forms of oral linguistic heritage. Each entry has been carefully compiled, verified, edited, and presented in a standardized lexicographical format.
Every lexical entry includes:
• Headword
• Classification (Idiom, Proverb, Saying, Sarcasm, Humorous Expression, Rebuke, Abuse Expression, etc.)
• Contextual meaning in Hindi
• Scholarly/Lexical meaning in English
The material has been compiled through comparative study of published books, dictionaries, folklore collections, academic research, digital archives, and traditional oral sources. Regional variants and contextual meanings have been carefully examined to present the most authentic and widely accepted forms while preserving the natural diversity of the Haryanvi language.
The expressions documented in this work reflect the cultural memory, agricultural traditions, rural life, family relationships, occupational practices, folk wisdom, humour, social behaviour, and historical experiences of Haryana. Consequently, this lexicon is not merely a language reference but also an important source for understanding the region's intangible cultural heritage.
This volume has been prepared with particular emphasis on language documentation, lexical standardization, descriptive linguistics, sociolinguistics, and cultural preservation. References to castes, occupations, communities, or historical social structures are retained solely for purposes of linguistic authenticity and academic documentation and should always be interpreted within their historical and cultural context.
