Description

The Kāvya-kaustubha is an independent work of Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa, which deals with the basic elements of Sanskrit poetics. Each of the definitions here is followed by examples from Vaiṣṇava literature or verses composed by the author himself. Although primarily didactic in nature, the selection of illustrative verses given here makes this book appealing to anyone interested in Vaiṣṇava poetry.
This edition includes:
1. The original Sanskrit text in Devanagari, critically edited based on more than 20 manuscripts.
2. Roman transliteration.
3. An ancient Sanskrit gloss.
4. An English translation of the original text.
5. Ample footnotes glossing technical terms and elucidating some of the examples.
6. Graphic illustrations of the pictorial poetry (citra-kavitva).

About the Author

Known as the Gauḍīya Vedānta Ācārya, he was born either at the end of the 17th century or at the beginning of the 18th century in Odisha. He played a major role in the religious and philosophical debates that took place in the court of King Sawai Jai Singh II (1699-1743 AD) in Jaipur and was commissioned by him to write at least two works— a Vedānta commentary named Brahma-sūtra-kārikā-bhāṣya, and a text on comparative philosophy named Tattva-dīpikā. Vidyābhūṣaṇa was a polymath and became one of the most prolific Gauḍīya authors, writing at least two dozen texts, some of which seem to be lost.
