Description

When painter Emily Hartwell inherits a centuries-old stone house in a quiet English village, she arrives carrying two things: an unfinished portrait she cannot complete, and a final conversation she cannot undo.

The house is patient. It has always been patient.

As her brush begins to move again, Emily realizes something inside the house is giving back what grief took from her. But nothing it offers comes without cost.

As secrets surface — her mother’s hidden visits, a sketchbook filled with a presence lurking in corners, and a locked locket etched with a desperate plea — Emily must confront a truth far older than the house itself.

And a presence that has been waiting… for someone to come home.

About the Author

This is a book about grief and the strange forms it takes when we refuse to look at it directly. It is about houses — the way certain places hold the shape of the people who have moved through them — and about painting, which is, among other things, the discipline of learning to see what is actually there rather than what the mind autocompletes.
The house in these pages is fictional, though anyone who has stood in a very old building and felt something they could not name will understand the kind of truth the story is reaching for. The village is fictional. The characters are fictional. The grief is not.
I am interested in the exchange that certain kinds of loss require us to make: the giving up of the sharpest parts of ourselves in order to survive, and the question of whether what remains is still, in any meaningful sense, us. The house in this novel makes that exchange literal. Most of us make it quietly, over years, without noticing until something makes us look.
I am also interested in the things we do not say. The letters we write and seal and do not send. The calls we mean to make. The words that become permanently last without our intending it.
Emily’s painting is about the almost — the face that is almost resolved, the portrait almost finished, the self almost found. I believe the almost is not a failure state. I believe it is the human condition: perpetually in motion toward something, perpetually in the act of becoming. The incomplete thing is not less real for its incompleteness.
It is, in many ways, exactly enough.
