Description

Most editing mistakes are not caused by poor grammar.

They happen because editors focus on individual sentences before understanding the author's message. They happen because style guides are followed without judgment, consistency is treated as an afterthought, and editing becomes a search for errors rather than a process of improving communication.

Building the Copy Editor's Mindset is a practical guide for aspiring and early-career editors who want to move beyond correcting text and develop the thinking skills that support effective copyediting.

Rather than presenting copyediting as a collection of rules, the book explores the decisions behind the edits. It examines how professional editors approach clarity, consistency, author voice, style sheets, fact-checking, sense-checking, and editorial judgment in real publishing environments.

Through practical examples, workflows, checklists, and editorial tools, readers learn not only what to change, but why those changes matter.

Inside the book, you will learn how to:
• Improve clarity while preserving the author's voice
• Work confidently with grammar, punctuation, and consistency
• Use style sheets, checklists, and editorial tools effectively
• Approach copyediting in clear and manageable stages
• Communicate professionally with authors and handle queries constructively
• Develop the habits, confidence, and judgment that support long-term editorial growth

Written in a clear and approachable style, this handbook bridges the gap between learning editing rules and applying them in practice.

Whether you are preparing for your first editing role, transitioning into publishing, or strengthening your editorial foundations, Building the Copy Editor's Mindset provides a practical framework for becoming a more thoughtful, confident, and effective editor.

About the Author

Divya Jyoti Munjal is an independent publishing professional and author with over 22 years of experience in academic and professional publishing. Her work has focused on strengthening editorial workflows, systems, and standards that support effective delivery of knowledge.

Before establishing her independent consultancy in 2026, Divya spent more than 13 years at Sage Publications, most recently as a Senior Content Manager. In this role, she served as a key escalation point for complex author and editor queries and developed a comprehensive Journal Editor Guide to support standardized global production workflows.

Earlier in her career, she held senior editorial and leadership roles at Thomson Digital and MPS Ltd., contributing to publishing programs for leading global organizations such as Elsevier, Emerald, and Wolters Kluwer.

Divya is also the author of Journal Publishing Behind the Scenes: Systems, KPIs and the Illusion of Progress, a book that explores publishing workflows, author experience, and the hidden operational systems behind academic publishing.

Divya holds an M.Ed., an M.A. in History, and a B.Sc. in Zoology. She brings together this academic foundation and extensive industry experience to advocate for human-centric operations. She believes that every system and metric should ultimately serve a meaningful outcome for the people involved.

In Building the Copy Editor’s Mindset: Theory and Rules for Early-Career Editors, Divya translates her experience into a practical, mentor-style guide. Her aim is to help early-career editors move beyond rule-based editing and develop confidence, clarity, and professional judgment.
She continues to live her philosophy of “designing for better days” by balancing her professional work with a commitment to nature, reflection, and lifelong learning.
