Description

In the intricate and dynamic realm of contemporary law enforcement, the significance of psychology in policing has grown markedly essential. “The Psychology of Policing: Traits and Selection Strategies” investigates the vital intersection of psychology and law enforcement, providing a rigorous analysis of how psychological principles and evaluations can improve the efficacy, accountability, and compassion of police officers, especially at the sub-inspector rank.
Historically, police recruitment in India has prioritized physical standards, educational qualifications, and written assessments. The increasing complexity of societal issues, public expectations, and technological advancements necessitates a more comprehensive approach. This book underscores that, in addition to physical preparedness and technical training, psychological attributes such as emotional stability, stress resilience, interpersonal skills, ethical integrity, and sound decision-making are crucial indicators of an officer's performance and dependability.
This study offers a comprehensive analysis of the deficiencies in current recruitment practices by examining historical developments, institutional frameworks, and the progression of the Indian police system, particularly in Uttar Pradesh. It makes a compelling case for integrating psychometric testing and psychological evaluation into the selection and

training processes. Drawing on both Indian and international practices, it demonstrates how psychological tools can be harnessed not only to screen out unsuitable candidates but also to select and nurture individuals best suited for the demanding responsibilities of policing.
This book is an essential resource for policymakers, police administrators, trainers, researchers, and students of criminal justice and psychology. It advocates for an evidence-based, ethical, and reformative approach to police recruitment—one that prioritizes character, competence, and community service in equal measure.
