Description

What if engineering education began with building, not memorising?

The CDIO Innovation Workbook: From Idea to Engineering Product is a structured, activity-driven workbook for first-year engineering students who want to do more than pass exams — they want to build things that matter.

Aligned to the internationally recognised CDIO framework (Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate) developed by MIT and leading global universities, this workbook takes students on a complete innovation journey: from observing a real problem in their surroundings to building a minimum viable prototype, conducting risk analysis, and presenting a startup-ready solution to the world.

Unlike conventional engineering textbooks, every chapter produces a concrete artefact — a problem statement, stakeholder map, system architecture diagram, lean waste log, FMEA table, test report, or pitch deck. By the final chapter, these combine into an Innovation Dossier: a tangible portfolio of applied engineering work that students can show employers, institutions, and investors.

What makes this workbook different:

→ Parallel Solo and Team paths in every chapter — work independently or as a team
→ Sketch-based visual thinking prompts that activate learning before theory arrives
→ A narrative Red Thread — five student characters (Nandini, Katie, Sasha, Jason, and Natasha) guide every chapter, modelling real team dynamics, iterative thinking, and honest failure on their journey from a hostel rooftop to AquaAlert, an IoT water monitoring startup
→ 12 global and Indian case studies — Tesla, Dyson, ISRO Chandrayaan, Jaipur Foot, Tata, and IDEO
→ Explicit alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals
→ Tools including 5-Why analysis, SCAMPER, Pugh matrix, empathy mapping, FMEA, and TAM/SAM/SOM market sizing
→ A 60-hour faculty implementation guide and full assessment rubrics included

Endorsed by faculty from SASTRA University, Vel Tech University, Panimalar Engineering College, and Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering, and by industry professionals from the United States.

Whether you are a student working through this book alone in a hostel room at midnight, or a team in a structured first-year innovation course — the journey is the same. Observe. Ask why. Imagine. Build. Break. Fix. Repeat.

"The chapters are not topics to memorise. They are tools to use, in sequence, on a real thing you are building." — Dr Arvind A R

About the Author

Dr. Arvind A R is an engineering innovation practitioner, educator, and author committed to transforming how engineering is taught and practised in India and beyond. His work sits at the intersection of CDIO-based education, design thinking, lean product development, and industry–academia collaboration.

With extensive experience in engineering innovation, product development, and digital manufacturing, Dr. Arvind has led multiple initiatives related to Industry 5.0 technologies, innovation-driven manufacturing systems, and emerging engineering practice. He has worked closely with engineering institutions across India, helping faculty and students bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application.

His philosophy as an educator is rooted in one conviction: that engineering students learn best not by being told, but by doing. Every exercise in his workbook comes from something tested in practice, refined through real student feedback, and proven to produce tangible outcomes.

The CDIO Innovation Workbook — his first published work — is the distillation of years of mentoring first-year engineering students, and reflects his belief that the first year of an engineering programme is not too early to begin building, designing, and innovating. The workbook has received endorsements from faculty at SASTRA University, Vel Tech University, Panimalar Engineering College, and Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering, as well as from industry professionals in India and the United States.

Dr. Arvind continues to work at the frontier of engineering education reform, developing resources and frameworks that prepare students for the challenges of a rapidly changing technological world.
