Description

India's democratic journey is one of the most remarkable political experiments in the modern world. As the world's largest democracy, India has continuously evolved through constitutional innovation, institutional adaptation, political participation, and democratic resilience. Understanding the political process in India, therefore, requires more than a study of constitutional provisions; it demands an examination of the institutions, actors, policies, ideologies, and contemporary challenges that collectively shape democratic governance.
This textbook, Political Process in India, has been prepared with the objective of providing students, teachers, researchers, and aspirants of competitive examinations with a comprehensive, systematic, and contemporary understanding of Indian politics. The book is designed in accordance with the latest undergraduate curriculum and integrates both classical constitutional perspectives and emerging dimensions of governance in the twenty-first century.
The text is organised into four comprehensive chapters. The first chapter examines the constitutional framework, democratic governance, and the functioning of major constitutional institutions, highlighting their role in strengthening accountability, transparency, and institutional transformation. The second chapter explores the evolution of Indian federalism, public policy, Centre-State relations, fiscal federalism, decentralisation, and contemporary debates that continue to shape India's federal democracy. The third chapter focuses on political parties, electoral politics, democratic participation, electoral reforms, voting behaviour, political communication, and the role of civil society in democratic consolidation. The final chapter analyses contemporary issues confronting Indian democracy, including identity politics, social justice, secularism, citizenship, gender representation, regionalism, human rights, tribal rights, environmental governance, digital democracy, artificial intelligence, misinformation, and the future of democratic deepening.
Throughout the book, emphasis has been placed on presenting concepts in a clear, analytical, and student-friendly manner while incorporating recent constitutional developments, judicial interpretations, policy initiatives, and contemporary political debates. Each topic has been explained with a balanced academic approach, enabling readers to connect theoretical perspectives with practical political realities.
It is my sincere hope that this book will stimulate critical thinking, strengthen constitutional values, and encourage readers to engage meaningfully with India's democratic institutions and political processes. If this work contributes, even in a small measure, to developing informed, responsible, and enlightened citizens, its purpose will have been fulfilled.
