At forty-nine, an engineer walked away from a secure career. This is the story of what he found beyond it.
Dr. K. R. Madhu Kumar spent nearly three decades in Andhra Pradesh, beginning on a night shift in a thermal power station control room and rising to Divisional Engineer in the state's power generation corporation. Then, in 2018, he chose voluntary retirement, a decision many around him found hard to understand.
In this warm and honest memoir, he looks back on the journey: the colleagues and mentors who shaped him, a marriage that began with an unexpected letter, the night his premature son fought for life even as his father's death came, and the small wishes of his parents he could fulfil and those he could not.
He also reflects on the questions that led to his decision. Do we live to work, or work to live? What do we owe our families while there is still time? And what remains of respect once a designation is gone?
Translated from his Malayalam memoir Padavikalkkappuram Oru Jeevitham, this book is for anyone who has wondered whether there is more to life than a career, and for those planning the next stage of their own lives.
