A beautiful story that touches your heart
Roots in Borrowed Soil by Dr. Umesh Chawla is a heartfelt story of loss, courage, and renewal. Set against the backdrop of the Partition of India, it follows people forced to leave behind everything familiar and rebuild their lives on foreign soil. The writing is simple yet powerful, capturing both the pain of displacement and the quiet strength that helps survivors begin again. Reading this book brought back memories of the stories my grandparents shared with us — and that my father still tells — about the horror of Partition: of losing everything and then rebuilding in a new land, of children lost to hunger and sickness while crossing over, of friends who turned foes and looted what little they had left, of nights spent in shelter homes filled with fear and uncertainty. Roots in Borrowed Soil captures those emotions with truth and tenderness, reminding us of the strength and resilience that kept families like theirs going when everything else was gone.
