About the Author
Dr. Vijayalakshmi Aluri is a distinguished gynecologist, writer, health educator, and translator who has made significant contributions to Telugu literature and public health education.
She has written around 150 short stories, four novels, and several health education books, including Matrutvam, The Story of Our Body, Adolescent Girls’ Health, and Adolescents’ Health and Behavior. Her first short story, Malupu (Twist), won a prize in the Diwali short-story competition conducted by Andhra Prabha.
Dr. Aluri has translated internationally acclaimed health-education books from English into Telugu, including Where There Is No Doctor, Where Women Have No Doctor, and Where There Is No Psychiatrist, published by Hyderabad Book Trust. Her translations of The Story of Blood, Thumpa and Sparrow, and Tortoise Wins Again were published by the National Book Trust of India.
Her book Adolescent Girls’ Health reached one lakh girls through schools, colleges, and community programmes with support from government and non-government organizations.
Her literary and health-education work has appeared in magazines, newspapers, radio, television, and academic publications. She wrote the popular women's health column “Arogya Vijayalu” for Vanitha magazine and has participated in television discussions on women's issues, health, and literature.
Her writings have also entered academic curricula. Her essays have been included in university and college textbooks, and her story Flower Garden, translated into English, was selected among the twelve best stories from about 1,500 Indian-language stories in a Humanscape competition.
Her contribution to literature and translation has earned her recognition in “Who’s Who of Indian Writers” and “Who’s Who of Indian Translators.”
