जुर्म समाज के लिए हानिकारक है । और उससे भी अधिक नुकसानदेह हैं वे जिनको जुर्म करने की आदत पढ़ चुकी हो । पर सोचने वाली बात यह है कि यह ख़तरनाक आदत भी समाज की ही देन नहीं है क्या ? वे तमाम लोग जिनकी नाकाम उम्मीदें समाज के ठेकेदारों के हाथों मसली जाती हैं, जिनकी कोई सुनवाई नहीं होती - न न्याय के दर पर न ही इंसानियत के कठघरे में – आख़िर कब तक चुप बैठें ? प्रतिवाद एक नागरिक का प्रजातंत्र में जन्मसिद्ध अधिकार माना गया है । किन्तु प्रतिवाद करते हुए कानून को अपने हाथ में ले लेना कहाँ तक जायज़ है ? क्या एक क़ातिल का मनस्तत्व केवल उसके कुकर्म की काली सियाही से ही ओतप्रोत होता है ? क्या उसमें कोई और पहलू नहीं हो सकता जो भिन्न हो, संवेदनशीलता से युक्त हो ? इन्हीं कठिन प्रश्नों के उत्तर अपने उपन्यास "क़त्ल की आदत" में उपन्यासकार जितेन्द्र माथुर ने तलाशे हैं।
