Adam loves travelling in India. Each time he visits the country, his affection for it and its people increases. In early 1994, he married into a large, extended Indian family. Since then, he has visited the country over fifty times, spending time with his Indian acquaintances, family and friends, as well as
sightseeing. After he retired from dentistry in 2017, his wife, a retired barrister, and the author have been making annual visits to India that are three
months in duration. No more does he feel like an outsider. He has come to regard the country as his second home.
Unlike many foreigners who travel to India and spend only a day or two in places they visit, Adam tends to have much longer sojourns in the towns and other locations he visits. He does this deliberately in order to both explore the places and to imbibe something of the local ‘atmosphere’. Having visited some towns and regions often more than once during the last 32 years, he has been able to chart changes we have noticed. Some of these are discussed in this book.
In this book, he will transport you on a fascinating journey through parts of western, central, and southern India, including: Karnataka, Maharashtra,
Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. Other books Adam has written relate travels elsewhere in India. The present volume describes what he saw and experienced on the journey that he made with his wife during our most recent trip, between November 2025 and February 2026. In addition to recounting their most recent travels, he has added some accounts and observations made in the past by earlier travellers to the places they saw.
As for the ‘Road To Heaven’ in the title, you will discover all about this intriguing thoroughfare and a whole host of other places of interest by reading this book. Regarding the subtitle, ‘Passage through India’, this does not relate to heaven … .
