INDIA — THE JOURNEY OF A LAND: FROM GONDWANA TO THE REPUBLIC is a sweeping historical journey across the making of the Indian subcontinent and the societies that developed upon it.
The story begins before India existed as a modern political idea—with the formation of the Indian landmass, Gondwana, tectonic movement, the closing of the Tethys and the rise of the Himalayas. From geology, the narrative moves into the earliest human presence, prehistoric landscapes, changing technologies, agriculture, settlements and the emergence of the first cities.
The book then explores the Harappan world, Vedic traditions, the Mahajanapadas, Buddhism and Jainism, the rise of Magadha and the Mauryan Empire. It continues through the Gupta period and the many regional kingdoms of the subcontinent, followed by the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughal world and the changing political, economic and cultural networks of early modern India.
The colonial period brings a new transformation: Company rule, the expansion of British power, economic change, resistance and the uprising of 1857. The narrative then follows the growth of Indian nationalism, social and religious reform, the Indian National Congress, mass movements, revolutionary traditions, Gandhi, Ambedkar, the constitutional struggle, the Second World War, Partition and the transfer of power in 1947.
The journey continues into independent India—the making of the Constitution, integration of the Republic, the first general election, economic and social transformation, the Green Revolution, wars and national security, the reforms of 1991, liberalisation, the information-technology revolution, digital payments and India's expanding scientific and technological capabilities.
The final part looks beyond political history to the land and people of India: its geography, Himalayas, rivers, plateaus, coasts and islands; agriculture and food; languages, religions and philosophies; architecture, literature, music, cinema and sport; science, medicine, education, demography, migration, employment and climate change.
Throughout the book, evidence, interpretation and uncertainty are distinguished wherever possible. Geological research, archaeology, inscriptions, coins, literary traditions, institutional records and modern scientific documentation are treated as different kinds of evidence, each with its own strengths and limitations.
Rather than presenting India's history as a single uninterrupted story, this book presents it as a layered journey shaped by landscapes, migrations, cities, states, ideas, institutions, conflicts, exchanges and the choices of generations.
From an ancient continental fragment to a modern Republic, this is the journey of a land—and of the people who made their histories upon it.
