Over View of the ‘Sivam’

The theme of the Sivam is happy marriage. The novel takes off when Sivam, the protagonist, catches his American wife, Margaret, in bed with her lover, Saradhi. Girija, Madhavi and Margaret enter the protagonist’s life at different stages. They stand for beauty, intellect and matter. Sivam marries Girija for her beauty, though he falls in love with intelligent and highly educated Madhavi. When he goes to the U.S. for post doctoral research, and marries Margaret there, and brings to India. Girija turns her beauty into goodness. Will she wins back her hubby? Is she a guide to happy marriage? The novel provides answers.

The main characters are archetypal. Girija, Sivam and Satyam stand for the trinity, that ensures lasting happiness in wedding. The novel has a host of characters. They give an insight into relationships, follies and foibles. Romance, satire and humour are the staple of the novel.

The Sivam is an allegory. It can be read at different levels. The common reader just turns the pages to know the fate of Sivam’s marriage. It focuses on the advantage in bridiging the east and west. The reader, who wants to know what life is and how to go beyond dualites and reach truth, finds a way to light. The novel is a page from life. It is compendium of Indian mysticism, a panacea to the whole world.

About the Author

D.V.S.R. Murthy is Saraswata Siromani, a novelist, short story writer, biographer, critic, linguist, lexicographer, book-reviewer, radio talker, and so on. 23 books stand to his credit. He taught English language and literature to the students of the degree classes in Andhra Pradesh for more than three decades before he had settled down as an advocate.
His literary career took off as a critic. 22 articles on literary, political and other subjects were published in almost all leading journals of India. His first Telugu story, Velugubata, glowing darkness, was selected by a leading weekly in 1979 in a competition. He wrote 39 short stories till now. Four of them won awards of Rs.1500/-, Rs.1000/-, Rs.500/-and Rs.400/-in various competitions.
Murthy wrote the biographies of Mahatma Gandhi (1967) and Gopalakrisna Gokhale(1969). His popular work is English in 60 Days (1986) in Telugu and Hindi. Maugham's Novels: A Critical Study (1991) is his research work for a Ph.D. A Manual of History of English-Language and A Handbook of Literary Forms (1991) are in great demand by college students all over India.
His forte is creativity. He wrote four Telugu novels, and the first one, Mithyabimbaalu, stood eighth in more than 100 novels in a competition by Andhra Prabha Weekly and was serialized in 1979. Reviewing his second novel, Satyam Sivam Sundaram, in Andhra Prabha Weekly, D.K. said, 'Undoubtedly a great novelist is born.' His four Telugu novels and thirty-nine short stories carved out a niche for him as a writer. The Glimpses of Life is the anthology of his 14 short stories.
