Yoga is a scientific and spiritual discipline within the Indian knowledge tradition, whose
ultimate objective is the elevation of human consciousness and the realization of the Self.
Among the various means of yogic practice, Āsana occupies a significant position. In
contemporary times, Āsana is often understood merely as a form of physical exercise or a
health-promoting activity; however, within the classical yogic tradition, its nature is far more
profound and comprehensive. The present study aims to analyze the fundamental nature of
Āsana and its authentic purpose within the process of yogic practice. To achieve this
objective, a philosophical and interpretative examination of major yogic texts, including the
Pātañjalayoga Sūtra, Haṭhayogapradīpikā, Gheraṇḍa Saṁhitā, and Śiva Saṁhitā, has been
undertaken.
