Description

The Still and the Clear is an account of twenty years spent practicing across Theravāda, Zen, Chan, Tibetan Vajrayāna, Jōdo Shinshū, and Shambhala traditions, from the borān kammaṭṭhāna lineage preserved by the UK Samatha Trust to Mahasi noting, koan practice, and Dzogchen recognition.

This is not a comparative religion textbook, and it doesn't claim that all paths lead to the same place. Instead, it asks a narrower and more useful question: when you actually sit down and practice these systems, one after another, over years, what structural patterns show up in attention, perception, and experience, regardless of the doctrine wrapped around them? And where do those patterns break down?

The book moves through five parts, from the historical ground of the question, through the Theravāda traditions, East Asian Zen and Chan, the Tibetan path, and finally a synthesis that brings in contemporary neuroscience research, before landing on a set of careful, falsifiable claims rather than a grand unifying theory. Along the way it includes practical comparison tables, a glossary, a guide to each tradition's "gateway" practices, and excerpts from the author's own two-decade practice journal.

Written for practitioners who have wondered whether their tradition is the only one that "works," for meditators curious about traditions outside their own, and for anyone who wants a map of the contemplative landscape drawn by someone who has actually walked most of it, this book offers no final answers. It offers something more useful: a disciplined, honest account of what convergence looks like from the inside, and where the author's own certainty runs out.
