Description

FIVE POWERS. ONE DOOR. EVERY CHOICE IS YOURS.

In an India that leads the world, where the rupee is the strongest currency on earth and foreign lawyers queue to argue in Delhi’s courts, Dev Arora is the most careful advocate in the city. In ten years at the Bar he has never walked into a courtroom with fewer than three answers.

Then a young physicist brings him a dull patent dispute, and a recording of a dead man’s chant.

At a court-ordered inspection of her laboratory, a government observer slips his hand into his pocket, and the chant begins to play. A door opens in the air. Five powers pour into Dev: over minds, over weather, over distance, over time, over life itself. A bangle of five metals closes on his wrist, and no one can take it from him. It can only be given.

Each power has its own colour, its own note, and its own price. And those who know how to listen can hear him use them.

Now the Bureau wants him in a hospital. Washington, Beijing and Moscow want the machine. A secret order of door-keepers, hidden for eight hundred years beneath a garden across the river from the Taj Mahal, wants it destroyed. And the Supreme Court of India must decide who owns a door that has never belonged to anyone.

Somewhere in the dark waits Asvarin. Villagers paint his sign on their walls as an open ring. He is a healer no one has ever photographed, and his powers make no sound. He believes the door should never have been shut.

In this interactive novel, you make Dev’s choices.

Win a case cleanly, or put your hand on the scales of justice.
Trust your mentor, a foreign spy, or a secret society.
Cross the threshold to bring someone back, and pay for it in years of your own life.
Unmask the most loved and most feared man in India, or let him walk away.

Every choice is remembered. There are eight endings, and none of them is clean.

The story moves between the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort, Hampi, Golconda, Konark and the courtrooms of New Delhi. The Moonlight Court is a mature legal thriller, a superhero origin story and a moral puzzle in one book.

Which world will you close the door on?

Book One of The Five Gates.

About the Author

Kabir Batra lives in Delhi, a city where a Mughal tomb, a metro station and a district court can share the same street. He has spent much of his working life in courtrooms, from crowded trial courts to the high benches. That is where he started to wonder what would happen if the oldest questions in Indian myth, about power, duty and who has the right to decide, were argued before a judge.

The Five Gates began with one of those questions: what if a door to the gods opened in a laboratory under a court’s seal, and a careful lawyer had to answer for it? The Moonlight Court is the first book in the series.
