Why this book exists
A Note on Time, and a City Under the Ground
காலமும் கீழடியும்
Everything in this book happened a very, very long time ago.
The story of the anklet was first written down around 1,500 to 2,000 years ago, in the classical Tamil of the Sangam age, by a prince who became a monk. But the world he describes — a golden port city, ships from Rome, weavers making cloth as fine as mist, music drifting from upstairs windows — is older still. For a long time, no one was completely sure how much of that shimmering world was real history and how much was a poet making things beautiful.
Then the ground started talking. In 2014, archaeologists began to dig at a quiet village called Keezhadi, on the banks of the Vaigai river, only about 12 kilometers from the ancient city of Madurai — the very city where the heart of this story takes place. What they pulled out of the earth changed everything.
They found brick walls and drains from a carefully planned town. They found tiny clay discs used for spinning thread, and tanks for dyeing cloth. They found dice and game pieces, beads carried from far away, and — most astonishing of all — broken pieces of pottery with people’s names scratched onto them in an early Tamil script, more than 2,500 years old.
Ordinary people, 2,600 years ago,
could write their own names.
The poet had not been exaggerating.
Suddenly the epic looked less like a fairy tale and more like a window — a window into a real, busy, clever, literate Tamil civilization that was building cities and writing its own language while much of the world was still learning how. That is the secret thread running through this whole book. First you will meet the story. Then, piece by piece, you will meet the proof.
There is one more honest thing to say, and we will say it again later. Scholars still argue about the exact dates at Keezhadi — how old, precisely, the oldest layers are. That argument is not a weakness. It is science doing its job. Part of growing up as a reader is learning to love a good, careful argument about the evidence. This book will show you one.
