Dave and Laura are slowly packing up stuff and stowing it away in the parked truck. Laura picks up an old wooden chair that was a gift of their parents during their wedding ten years ago. It had so many memories but she knew it had to go. Dave isn’t as attached; he does a quick sweep of the room, checking for working utilities, broken fixtures or chipped paint. They had both decided that it was time to move on and sell the house. The mortgage was getting to high and Dave just recently was cut from work. They would have wanted to keep the house for some years more, but they can’t finance such high interest rates anymore. They have rented out an apartment flat which fits their lifestyle more. But there are just so many memories in this house they have a hard time cleaning up. After a last look at the rooms, Dave and Laura meet at the house lobby. They are excited about moving on, but also nostalgic about this house. Dave is more on the practical side and asks Laura if they have a chance of selling the house at a reasonable price. Laura assures her as best as she could, but she too is doubtful. In such terrible times as an economic recession, she also fears the house may take too long to be sold.
Selling a house is not an easy thing. If you have lived long enough in any place, you are bound to be attached to it. You have memories of the place and each corner would remind you of something whether it’s the table you and your sibling used to chase each other or the cabinet you hid in as a child or the front steps where you had your first kiss. You have also put a lot of investment in the house. Before, it may have been your parents and you’ve witnessed how they worked hard to buy the place and spruce it up. When it was your turn to help out, some of your salary went to paying the rent or handling some of the repairs. A lot of investment has been poured out on this house. The decision to sell a house is an important decision, but always not easy because of all the memories and investment it carries.
