Textbook of Chiropractic Anatomy
Black Book Series, Volume 9 — Based on M. H. Palmer's Green Book, Volume IX (1923)
In 1918, Mabel H. Palmer wrote the first anatomy textbook built specifically for chiropractors — not adapted from a medical text, but designed from the ground up around what a working chiropractor actually needs to know. For nearly forty years she taught anatomy at the Palmer School of Chiropractic, and her book, revised through five editions, became the profession's own foundational teaching text.
This volume brings that book back — not as a facsimile reprint, but as a complete reintegration for a modern classroom. Every chapter has been restated in a contemporary voice, organized around the clinical relationships a practicing chiropractor actually uses: why the occipito-atlantal joint anchors upper cervical technique, why the suboccipital muscles matter to cervicogenic headache, why the sciatic nerve's relationship to the piriformis is worth knowing cold.
Where Palmer's century-old claims still hold up — and several hold up better than you'd expect — this book says so plainly. Where they don't — her flat denial of spinal reflex arcs, her claim that a single spinal cause explains every hernia — this book argues the point directly, rather than footnoting the disagreement and moving on. The result reads less like a reference you consult and more like a teacher working through the material with you, one structure at a time.
What's inside:
All 21 chapters of classical anatomy — skeletal, muscular, circulatory, digestive, sensory, and reproductive systems — restated in full, with the nervous system given the extended five-chapter treatment Palmer herself gave it
A Chapter Summary and a 10–20 question multiple-choice quiz with answer key at the end of every chapter
A complete 530-entry glossary of anatomical terminology drawn from the original text
Full front matter, including a Foreword on why this material still belongs in a modern curriculum, and the four original prefaces preserved in Palmer's own words
Part of the Black Book Series from Palms Chiropractic College Press, continuing the same approach applied throughout this series: take the profession's own foundational literature seriously enough to argue with it honestly.
