Description

This book is about finding an abandoned stone farmhouse in the Algarve province of Portugal. It had been built in 1837 on the
upsweep of a hill and looked south to the sea. There was a 180 degree view of the Atlantic and the coast. Restoration was needed,
anything wood had rotted away, the tile floors were gone, the roof had collapsed. I would be the only foreigner in a rural village
named after a tree. I did not speak the language. There were going to be interesting times to come. The next 20 years would be
an experience worth writing about.

About the Author

Jerry Stivers was born in California. He has lived and worked in 14 countries on five continents, and is grateful to have
visited some of the more exotic places of the world -- Afghanistan (before the Russians), Bali (before jumbo jets),
Bangladesh (when it was East Pakistan), Dahomey (before it was Togo), Nepal, Zaire, Egypt, Sri Lanka (when it was Ceylon),
Chile and Cameroon (when it was The Cameroons).

He is also a photographer, and started taking black-and-white photographs while living and working in Pakistan. He
started exhibiting in Nigeria and has held several exhibitions since moving to Portugal. Most all of his exhibition photos
were taken with an early Asahi-Pentax 35mm camera using Takumar lenses.

He now lives in Portugal with his wife Letarae.
