Two goofy suicide bombers. Two explosive vests. And a box of Viagra.
On the eve of a devastating terrorist attack, two heavily brainwashed men are locked inside a dusty safehouse. They have their marching orders, an AK-47 each, and a countdown ticking away toward an 8:00 AM deadline. Their grand reward? Radical salvation and a real estate scam called Heaven.
But what happens when the grim machinery of ideological programming hits a wall of absolute, childish absurdity?
Stripped of their identities by the organization, the two men are known only by their codenames. Number 1 is rigid, temperamental, and desperately trying to maintain a straight face of religious solemnity. Number 2 is a simpleton more interested in sorting through the items in his bag, counting his belongings, and spraying deodorant into his underwear so he smells nice for the heavenly virgins.
The real crisis hits when a bizarre medical mishap leaves Number 2 temporarily amnesiac. With the clock ticking relentlessly toward the deadline, Number 1 is left entirely on his own with no outside help, forced to find increasingly hilarious, desperate ways to revive his partner's memory before the ultimate countdown ends.
Instead of preparing for martyrdom, Number 1 finds himself trapped in a philosophical pressure cooker, dodging Number 2’s inconveniently profound, childlike questions about faith, logic, and the mechanics of the afterlife.
From the author of Engaging Short Plays With a Twist, The Promise of Heaven is a gripping, darkly comedic, and deeply spiritual minimalist two-act play. This standalone script masterfully bends psychological tension to the breaking point, offering an unforgettable subversion of manipulation, dogma, and what it truly means to live.
Will they execute the plan, or will a dose of absolute clarity break the circuit before the clock strikes zero?
