A Complete Guide to News and News Reporting
Principles, Practice, Ethics, and Storycraft in Modern Journalism
In an age of information overload, shrinking news cycles and growing concerns about misinformation, the need for accurate, ethical and responsible journalism has never been greater.
A Complete Guide to News and News Reporting offers a comprehensive and practical introduction to the principles and professional skills that underpin credible journalism. Written by Melwyn Williams, the book takes readers from understanding what makes an event newsworthy to gathering information, interviewing sources, structuring reports, verifying facts and making sound editorial decisions.
Combining academic foundations with practical newsroom perspectives, the book explores news values, reporting techniques, story development, writing styles, attribution, journalistic ethics and the responsibilities of reporters in a rapidly changing media environment.
Designed for journalism students, aspiring reporters, educators, media trainees and working professionals, it provides an accessible resource for learning the craft and revisiting its essential principles.
At a time when almost anyone can publish information, the book makes an important distinction between merely sharing information and practising journalism with accuracy, fairness, context and accountability.
Whether used as a classroom resource, a professional reference or a self-learning guide, A Complete Guide to News and News Reporting aims to develop informed, confident and responsible journalists.

A strong advocate for cineliteracy and visual education, he has also developed initiatives aimed at promoting media awareness among younger audiences, including Cinema 4 Schools, a curriculum designed to introduce filmmaking and visual storytelling at an early stage.
Beyond filmmaking and journalism, Melwyn is the founder of Indian Diaspora Global, a transnational initiative focused on diaspora engagement, cultural continuity, and civic participation. Through this platform, he leads the “Keep the Door Open” campaign, which advocates for dual citizenship for members of the Indian diaspora.

Committed to the welfare and dignity of artists, he founded Bahumukhi Kalakaar Sangam, an autonomous organisation focused on strengthening support systems, rights awareness, and social security for artists and technicians across creative industries.
His work reflects an interdisciplinary approach that connects filmmaking, journalism, education, and cultural leadership. As a speaker and educator, he has delivered lectures and masterclasses on cinema, aesthetics, journalism, social inclusion, constitutional values, and the role of culture in shaping democratic societies.
Through his writing, filmmaking, and public initiatives, he continues to explore how storytelling can build meaningful connections between people, ideas, and generations.
