Description

Ten quietly extraordinary stories about the ordinary moments that shape a life.

A six-year-old girl crosses a rainy street to give a stranger her umbrella. Two friends slide a lunch tray across a cafeteria table and stay friends for forty-two years. A daughter finds a locked cedar chest at the foot of her late mother's bed - and inside it, an entire unlived life.

What We Carry Home: Stories of an Ordinary Life is a debut collection of contemporary literary short stories that moves through commuter trains in Paris, secondhand bookshops in Edinburgh, a tenement close in Old Town Edinburgh, a shoebox on a windowsill in Ljubljana, and a restaurant's last night in Lisbon - each story built around a single, unremarkable act of kindness, patience, or courage that turns out to be anything but small.

These are slice-of-life stories for readers who love character-driven, emotionally resonant fiction - the kind of quiet, contemplative storytelling readers of Kent Haruf, Elizabeth Strout, and Anthony Doerr return to again and again. Each story closes with a short reflection, an invitation to sit with what you've just read before turning the page.

This is a book about the people who stay. About the things we don't say out loud. About what we actually carry home with us, long after the moment has passed.

Perfect for readers who love:
- Literary short story collections
- Heartwarming, character-driven contemporary fiction
- Inspirational stories about family, friendship, and everyday kindness
- Quiet, reflective fiction to read slowly, one story at a time

About the Author

Mohit Porwal is many things before he is a writer.

He is the kind of person strangers somehow end up telling their life stories to on long journeys. He has never quite understood why this happens. He has always been glad that it does.

He has spent most of his life paying attention to the people around him. To the small moments that don't make headlines but quietly shape everything - a forty-two-year friendship survives an eleven-month silence, a woman connects with a stranger through notes left in a secondhand book. The things that seem ordinary until you look at them long enough.

What We Carry Home is his debut collection of short stories - ten quiet, closely observed portraits of ordinary lives.

He is, by his own admission, still learning.
