Description
This introductory chapter establishes the fundamental principles underlying the intersection of
chemical kinetics and molecular spectroscopy, two cornerstones of modern physical chemistry.
The chapter provides a comprehensive foundation for understanding how spectroscopic
techniques serve as powerful tools for investigating reaction mechanisms, determining rate
constants, and elucidating the molecular-level dynamics of chemical transformations. We
explore the theoretical framework of reaction kinetics, from elementary rate laws to complex
mechanistic pathways, while simultaneously introducing the spectroscopic methods that enable
real-time monitoring of these processes. The integration of kinetic theory with spectroscopic
observation represents a paradigm shift in how chemists investigate and understand chemical
reactivity, providing unprecedented insight into the temporal evolution of molecular systems.
