Description

The transition of electric power systems toward direct current (DC) architectures marks one of
the most significant shifts in modern power engineering. Driven by the rapid growth of renewable
energy integration, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission, DC microgrids, and powerelectronics-dominated networks, DC grids are increasingly recognized as a viable and often
superior alternative to conventional AC systems. However, this transition brings with it a unique
set of protection challenges—chief among them the absence of natural current zero-crossings,
extremely fast fault current rise times, and the vulnerability of power electronic converters to
even momentary fault conditions
