Description

Before a nation could be free, it had to learn to stand up.
A train whistle sounds across Bombay in 1853. A young widow and queen refuses to surrender her fortress. A wandering monk rises before thousands in Chicago and speaks for a land the world had written off. A lawyer is thrown off a train in South Africa. A young man hurls a bomb into an empty assembly hall, then waits calmly to be arrested.
Dawn of Freedom tells how India won its freedom through the lives of thirteen reformers, thinkers and fighters between 1850 and 1950: Lakshmibai, Vidyasagar, Dayananda Saraswati, Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, Dadabhai Naoroji, Vivekananda, Tilak, Tagore, Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Subhas Chandra Bose, Sardar Patel and B. R. Ambedkar.
Each chapter opens with a vivid moment, follows a single life, and ends with that person’s legacy today. Along the way you will find a short tale worth telling and an honest note on what is legend and what is record.
This is the finale of The Awakening Trilogy, which began with Dawn of Reason and Dawn of Devotion. It also stands on its own. Seven maps, original pencil sketches, a timeline, a glossary and a guide to further reading complete the book.

About the Author

Naresh Rijhwani is a structural engineer, author and chronicler of places, people and changing times. Over a professional career spanning more than four decades, he worked on major industrial and infrastructure projects in India and overseas, holding senior engineering and leadership positions with Public Sector Organisations and International Engineering Companies.
Born in 1956 into a Sindhi Hindu family whose roots trace back to Larkana and Sukkur in Sindh, Naresh grew up in Delhi at a time when the capital was still carrying the marks of Partition.
His writing reflects a continuing curiosity about how people, societies and civilisations have shaped their understanding of the world and their place within it. In Dawn of Freedom, he turns to the reformers, thinkers and revolutionaries who challenged entrenched traditions, confronted social injustice and helped awaken India's consciousness during its long journey towards freedom. From Swami Dayanand Saraswati and Swami Vivekananda, who inspired social and spiritual renewal, to Rani Lakshmibai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Rabindranath Tagore, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Bhagat Singh and Subhas Chandra Bose, he explores the diverse ideals, courage and sacrifices that shaped India's struggle for independence and its vision of a new nation. For him, the awakening of freedom is more than a defining chapter in India's history; it is a continuing reminder that liberty carries a responsibility to uphold justice, dignity and equality, and that the true measure of a nation's freedom lies in its commitment to the humanity and well-being of all its people.
