Description

THE DONKEY ROAD: The American Dream They Were Never Told About

Every dangerous journey begins with a promise.

For Rajveer Dhariwal and his family, America represents security, dignity, opportunity, and a better future for their children. But when legal pathways seem distant and an agent promises them a secret route to the United States, hope begins to overpower caution.

What follows is not the America they were promised.

Their journey takes them across countries, airports, hidden rooms, crowded vehicles, remote trails, criminal networks, and eventually the unforgiving Darién Gap. Along the way, the family encounters migrants from different parts of the world—each carrying a dream, a debt, and a story.

Some are robbed.

Some are exploited.

Some disappear.

Some never reach the destination.

And some survive only to discover that crossing the border does not end the journey.

The Donkey Road is a work of fiction inspired by the documented realities surrounding dangerous irregular migration routes. Through the experiences of one family—and the tragedies they witness along the way—the novel explores human trafficking, smuggling networks, violence, sexual exploitation, debt, family separation, immigration uncertainty, deportation, and the psychological cost of putting one’s life in the hands of strangers.

The novel does not argue against immigration. It draws a clear distinction between lawful immigration and the dangerous underground routes sold by smugglers as shortcuts to a dream.

At its heart is a simple question:

How much should a person risk for a dream—and what happens when the road to that dream begins taking away everything that made the dream worthwhile?

A gripping human story, a cautionary journey, and a reminder that no promised destination is worth surrendering your life, your family, or your future to those who profit from desperation.

About the Author

Parmanand Alipurwale is a scientist, researcher, and author whose writing explores the intersection of science, human behavior, society, spirituality, relationships, and the choices that shape human lives.

With a Ph.D. in computational biophysics and extensive experience in biomedical research, he has served in academic, scientific, managerial, and leadership roles. His books move beyond individual disciplines to examine larger questions about humanity—why people desire what they desire, how circumstances influence their decisions, and what happens when hope, fear, ambition, love, and survival collide.

In The Donkey Road, he turns his attention to one of the most consequential decisions a family can make: placing its future in the hands of smugglers promising an illegal shortcut to another country.

His guiding thought is:

“The mind works for a future that never comes. The heart works for the present. If the present is good, the future is bright.”
— Parmanand
