Preface
யாதும் ஊரே; யாவரும் கேளிர்.
“Every town is our town; everyone is our kin.”
— KANIYAN PUNGUNDRANAR, PURANANURU 192
For a long time, I thought saying “Tamil is really old” was enough. Old is impressive. But “old,” on its own, can’t survive one sharp question.
Here’s the question. There’s a huge difference between a civilization that was ancient and one that’s still alive. Plenty of great civilizations rose, built incredible cities, and carved giant monuments — then went quiet. Their languages stopped. Their daily life ended. They became history: museums, not living things.
Tamil is different. It has written proof reaching back more than two thousand years. It’s still spoken today by tens of millions. And its literature was never fully cut off. That unbroken line is the whole point of this book.
So in these pages I trade hype for evidence. I follow Tamil down five paths — language, literature, trade, government, and the spread of knowledge. Each chapter is a bend in a river. Each one adds a piece of proof. By the end, the question answers itself.
I’ve written it as a story, not a lecture. A curious student named Arivan and his teacher, Professor Vasan, start talking on the bank of the river Kaveri. Bit by bit they stack up the evidence and reach a clear verdict. Come along for the walk.
Tamil isn’t a world civilization because it conquered anyone. It’s a world civilization because it kept flowing — through every drought, flood, and empire. The Kaveri runs high some years and thin in others, but it never disappears. Tamil is exactly the same.
