Tamil Letters and Sangam Songs (தமிழ் எழுத்தும் சங்கப் பாடலும்)

This cheerful first book introduces children to the Tamil alphabet and to some of the oldest and most loved lines of Tamil poetry. No earlier knowledge of Tamil is needed. Every letter, word and song comes with a simple “Say it” line in English letters, so children can sound out Tamil with confidence.

Part 1, My Tamil Letters, moves step by step through the 12 life letters (vowels), the 18 body letters (consonants), the letter friends that join them, the three little dots and Tamil numbers, ending with a child’s first Tamil words. Tracing pages train the hand, and clapping games make short and long sounds easy to hear.

Part 2, Songs from Long Ago, shares nine short classical poems from the Kuruntokai, the Purananuru and the Tirukkural, such as “The Whole World Is My Home” and “Kind Words Are Sweet Fruit.” Each song follows five steps: the song in Tamil, how to say it, what it means in simple English, a little “word magic” about Tamil, and an activity to try.

Part 3, Games and Puzzles, turns practice into play with letter hunts, missing-letter puzzles and quick-say challenges. The book closes with answers, a word list and a Tamil certificate for every child who finishes. QR codes link to two companion video lessons on the author’s YouTube channel.
