Left Behind: Bihar’s Missing Generation
Walk into Lakhnauri, Muzaffarpur on any afternoon. The doors are locked, old men sit alone on charpoys, women do the work of five people, and boys who should be in school are washing dishes in dhabas.
Left Behind is the story of the Bihar that stays. Millions of men leave for Delhi, Mumbai, Surat and Ludhiana because the land, the jobs and the promises never came. Behind them they leave aging parents, exhausted mothers and children who grow up too fast.
The book follows this journey from the empty village to the first train out. It goes into the ten-man rooms of the cities, the abuse of the word “Bihari”, and the work without rights. It then covers the migrants who die far from home and the families who struggle to bring the bodies back. It looks at the COVID lockdown, the long walk home, and the return to the same poverty. It also faces the damage that follows when fathers are gone: broken minds, and drugs reaching even ten-year-olds.
It ends with one question: can Bihar survive without its young, and what would actually change things?
This is not a book written from a distance. It is written by someone who grew up in the village and watched it empty, and it asks the country to finally notice the people left behind.
