Description

#1Bestseller at Amazon Australia

The Unlikely Indian Migrant is a warm, engaging memoir of migration, resilience, and the search for belonging. It traces the unexpected journey of Prem Parkash, a village boy from India whose life takes him through setbacks, opportunities, and life-changing transitions to eventually build a scientific career and family life in Australia.

The story brings together everyday-struggles and major turning points, capturing the realities of migration―cultural adjustment, uncertainty, rejection, hope, and the gradual rebuilding of identity in a new world. It also highlights the lighter side of cross-cultural life, with moments of humour, misunderstandings, and unexpected experiences that shape the migrant journey.
With honesty and simplicity, Prem reflects on his professional path in science alongside family life, friendships, and the small, quiet moments that give life its deeper meaning. Moving between India, New Zealand, and Australia, the narrative remains grounded in personal experience and human connection.

Written in a distinctive, story-driven style, this memoir departs from the formal tone of traditional autobiographies, offering instead a fluid, engaging, and immersive reading experience.
At its core, The Unlikely Indian Migrant is a thoughtful and emotional account of a life shaped by courage, change, and the universal search for belonging across cultures.

About the Author

Dr. Prem Dwivedi is an Indian Australian scientist, educator, and migrant whose life journey has spanned India, New Zealand, and Australia. Born in a small village in northern India, he grew up with limited resources but a strong belief in education. Through perseverance, academic dedication, and resilience, he went on to earn a PhD in Lucknow and build an international scientific career.

He has held academic and research positions at leading Australian universities and research institutions, contributing to advances in biomedical research while mentoring students from diverse cultural backgrounds―including the USA, Europe, China, Malaysia, Japan, India, and Australia.

Alongside his scientific work, he has remained actively engaged in community life, particularly within migrant and multicultural organisations, guided by the belief that belonging is built not only through achievement but also through service and connection.

Now based in Adelaide―home to cricket legend Sir Donald Bradman―Prem shares a powerful, deeply emotional story of migration.
