Description

Background
GDP growth rate, rising per capita income, addition to the list of billionaires could be a matter of pride for Nation, but the unemployment rate and that too among educated should be matter of serious concern.
It is happens when a large population lives under stress, to secure over 90% marks in school, struggles to compete for prestigious institutions or secure government jobs.

Guardians across the world are worried about future of children. While fresh university graduates struggle to seek first job, even well paid professionals with private sector corporations also, often live under a fear of getting laid off. Governments do their best in framing policies and programs, but the unemployment rate of 6-8 %, affects happiness of millions in society, that needs attention.

The Book
The Secret of Success in Career, makes an attempt to identify certain factors that could help in mitigating this stress. Education has a role in building the foundation, but the general knowledge could make a significant impact in career development.

A popular TV show Kaun Banega Crorepati, (who would like to be millionaire), hosted by Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, not only entertains but also promotes GK. This sets the tone for discussion, how GK is vital for success in various aspects of life, particularly in career planning.

It is noticed that people generally look for professions, having high-paying potential. The search is also confined to a fewer options, while hundreds of challenging career options go unnoticed. So it's the first case, where GK could make difference.

What we study may not always align with our profession. Career is often more of an opportunity that one should learn to grab. By pursuing opportunities, one should cultivate interest even in an area that may not have been the choice. The book cites a few examples, where people succeeded.

Each individual has unique strengths and weaknesses, but ability to withstand threats in life needs to be groomed to survive, even in worst situation. Passion is yet another key factor that plays an important role, whether it’s job, business, or social service.

Services of coaching centres, career counsellors, and even astrologers could be availed, but one needs to be self-dependent in study techniques, and it’s wiser to be own consultant, when it comes to deciding career path.

The spectrum of GK is vast, but a few domains relevant to career are – status of unemployment, current socio-political and economic scenario, climate change and civic issues affecting environment, history of industry and entrepreneurs.

In summary, the book advocates cultivation of passion, self-awareness, interest in GK, new skills, and keeping the window open to continuous learning.
