Description

Why do some thoughts help us solve problems while others keep us trapped in the same loop?

The Gita for the Overthinking Mind explores the difference between useful reflection and destructive brooding, bringing together insights from the Bhagavad Gita and modern research on rumination, attention, behaviour and problem-solving.

Through Arjuna's struggle, the book examines what happens when thinking loses its brakes: replaying conversations, questioning yourself endlessly, comparing where you are with where you think you should be, and repeatedly analysing situations without producing an answer or action.

The book offers a practical framework built around three simple questions:

Is this a why-question about me or a what-question about the situation?
What standard am I measuring myself against?
Has all this thinking actually produced anything?

It then moves from understanding the loop to breaking it—through action, practice, letting go, attention, moderation and better recognition of when thinking has stopped being useful.

Rather than presenting the Gita as a modern psychology textbook, the book openly distinguishes between what the ancient text says, what modern research supports, and where the two merely converge.

This is not a book about thinking less.

It is about learning to recognise which thinking is worth continuing—and when it is time to act.

About the Authors

Pushpa Ray

Pushpa Ray is a technology leader with more than six years of experience across data engineering, generative AI, SaaS, enterprise systems and banking technology.

She has worked across IT services, private-sector banking and public-sector banking, contributing to technology transformation, enterprise systems, analytics and large-scale business processes. She currently leads a data engineering and generative AI team working for an international bank.

Pushpa holds an MBA in Business Analytics from BITS Pilani and a B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering. Her professional experience brings a practical and analytical perspective to technology, people and decision-making.

Dharmpal Chaudhary

Dharmpal Chaudhary is a technology entrepreneur and engineering leader with more than nine years of experience across AI, Generative AI, SaaS, cloud and software engineering.

He has written books exploring how evidence can be used to approach large decisions rather than relying solely on conviction, including a previous work examining the Bhagavad Gita as a decision-making text.

Dharmpal founded Upcred.ai, where he served as Founder, CEO and CTO. He currently leads engineering teams for a company of more than a thousand people across three time zones and has built products at Impact Analytics, Plivo, Yellow.ai, WorkIndia, AirAsia Tech and Travelyaari.

His approach to this book comes from a professional habit developed through years of engineering and entrepreneurship: checking whether a claim is true before acting on it. It also comes from personal experience with the very problem explored in this book—the tendency to keep thinking long after thinking has stopped being useful.

Together, Pushpa and Dharmpal bring complementary perspectives from technology, analytical thinking, decision-making and lived experience to their exploration of the Bhagavad Gita and the modern problem of overthinking.
