‘The Cage of Identity’ begins with a question that comes into the life of almost every person at some point—Who am I really?
We are born, and several identities become attached to us— a name, a family, a caste, a religion, a society, a language and a culture. As we grow up, our identity gradually also comes to include education, a job, money, relationships, family reputation and society’s expectations. Slowly, we begin to see ourselves and make decisions about our lives based on these very identities. But are we really what our name, family, caste, religion, profession or social status tells us we are? In this book, you will learn how identity is formed, how society influences our identity and when this very identity becomes a cage for us. The book attempts to explain in simple language topics such as names and surnames, family and inheritance, caste and religion, social status, relationships, traditions, economic status, mental pressure, social expectations and personal freedom. This book will also compel you to think about how many decisions we make in our lives of our own free will and how many we make simply because society expects something from us. Most importantly, this book does not attempt to give you a ready-made identity. Rather, it invites you to look at, understand and question the identities you have created and those given to you by others. Because it is possible that the identity we have considered our truth for our entire lives may simply be an identity that we accepted from birth.
‘The Cage of Identity’ is a journey through this very question—Who are we, who makes us who we are and can we determine our own identity?
