Vito is the second-largest bull this range has ever known, and the only one who has ever made Pino look, even for a moment, like he was watching an equal. His tusks run long and pale enough to look carved rather than grown. His calm has been mistaken, more than once, for surrender — by men who paid for the mistake. He carries a promise he made before he had the words for one: that the distance between himself and his brother would never again be allowed to stand, and no chain forged by any man has ever once tested that.

Around them stand men who measure themselves against the same forest and come up smaller for it, and know it. A ranger who has spent twenty years losing to a smuggler he cannot catch, and shows up anyway, every time, because the alternative is unthinkable to him. A veterinarian who has given more patience to injured animals than most men give their own families, and calls it no sacrifice at all.
