The Seven Shades by Ravi Ranjan Goswami is a charming and educational collection of seven short stories reflecting Indian ideals of moral character. The basic tenets of Hindu mythology, as reflected in the seven sacred shades of Rama’s personality, are delightfully played out against social backdrops of modern life in India. A fascinating cast of characters including mischievous monkeys, a morally bankrupt young man about to cheat on an exam, a married couple who have lost the spark of Valentine’s Day, star-crossed lovers whose marriage crumbles in the face of human failings, a suspicious Nepalese watchman who only seems to be a friend to his community, a hardworking husband struggling with addiction, and a host of other supporting players inhabit these fascinating tales, which educate the reader about Indian life and culture as they entertain and edify.
