Description

Songs of the Islands is an anthology of modern poetry that brings together diverse contemporary voices, each shaped by personal experience yet resonant with universal human emotions. The poems in this collection explore love and loss, memory and belonging, faith and introspection, nature and social awareness, offering reflections that are both intimate and expansive.

Each poem stands as an individual “island,” complete in itself, while remaining part of a larger shared landscape of thought and feeling. The variety of styles, themes, and perspectives creates a rich poetic tapestry that invites the reader to pause, reflect, and connect.

Each section is followed by an Editor’s Note that offers gentle insights into the poems, adding depth without limiting interpretation. Songs of the Islands is a thoughtful collection for readers who value contemporary poetry that is sincere, reflective, and grounded in lived experience.

About the Author

Ravinder Sodhi is a poet, playwright, critic, translator, editor, and storyteller whose work has appeared in literary journals and newspapers across India, Canada, Australia, the UK, and the USA. Formerly Head of the Punjabi Department and Officiating Deputy Headmaster at The Punjab Public School, Nabha (Punjab), he has authored sixteen Punjabi books across genres, and his Punjabi translation of Khalil Gibran’s The Prophet is among his most acclaimed works. He has reviewed over 500 books in Punjabi and English and written several academic texts. His play collection Do Buhian Wala Ghar (A House with Two Doors) was awarded Best Play Collection of the Year (1987) by the Punjab Language Department. Five of his English books for children on Sikhism are ready for publication. His short story Ik Lamba Hauka inspired the short film Ik Lamba Jiha Hauka, made in Australia with local artists.
He has previously edited two Punjabi anthologies focused on NRI Punjabi writers—one featuring short stories, poems, and essays from authors based in Canada, the US, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand and another highlighting voices from Canada, Australia, and the US.
Songs of the Islands was planned and edited by him with the aim of bringing together diverse poetic voices in a single, harmonious collection.
