As I wrote BETWEEN TWO FLAGS, I was drawn to the spaces between: between two languages (Hindi and Mandarin), between two homelands (India and China), between duty and desire, between truth and silence. I wanted to explore what happens when two people find each other in that in-between place, that fragile, contested ground where loyalties are complicated and feelings are revolutionary.

Arjun and Mei Lin came to me fully formed, each carrying their own histories, burdens, and quiet courage. Their story is fiction, but the anxieties of living under institutional pressure, the challenges of navigating cultural misunderstandings, and the simple, terrifying act of loving without permission, these feel universal, perhaps especially today.

In telling their story, I've been fascinated by what happens when people choose kindness in conversations where the world expects confrontation, when they choose trust in rooms built for suspicion, when they choose each other against systems designed to separate them.

My deepest hope is that Arjun and Mei Lin's journey will remind you of the quiet rebellions we all undertake and that sometimes, our truest selves are found not in belonging to one side of a border, but in the uncharted territory between.
