Description

Sailors a night's voyage out from Egypt saw it before they saw the land: a steady point of fire low on the horizon, burning where no star should be. The Arab geographers who later climbed the tower called its light a second sun. For more than sixteen centuries the Pharos of Alexandria was the brightest thing made by human hands, the beacon that turned a flat, harbourless coast into the gateway of the ancient world.

Then the earthquakes brought it down, a sultan built his fort on the stump, and the sea took the rest.

The Second Sun is the story of that lost light, of the layered shore it stood on, and of how a city might make its wonder visible again without rebuilding a single stone.

Part One: The Wonder reconstructs the lighthouse itself: Sostratus and the Ptolemaic commission, the three-stage tower, the mirror and the fire, the coins and mosaics that preserve its image, and the medieval eyewitnesses who recorded its slow transformation from beacon to mosque to ruin. A comparative study sets the Ptolemaic Pharos beside the restored tower surveyed by al-Balawi in 1165, so that the building's own history becomes the first lesson in reading layered time.

Part Two: Strata of Civilisation treats the Pharos shore as one continuous site: Pharaonic, Ptolemaic, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Mamluk and modern, reading the stone of Qaitbay's citadel together with the debris field on the seabed beneath it. It brings the drowned city into the account: the sunken royal quarter and Antirhodos, the Heptastadion, and the submerged sites of Abu Qir.

Part Three: Reviving the Strata returns to the second sun. What should a city do with a wonder it can no longer see? The book proposes a framework for making civilisational layers legible without reconstruction: a light-ghost of the tower projected from the sea so that the Pharos burns again on the horizon, augmented and seasonal reconstructions that move through the strata, interpretive routes across the Qaitbay district, and the strict principles of reversibility that must govern any intervention on a World Heritage shore. A worked example applies the method to Qaitbay in detail, and a closing chapter shows how the same approach transfers to Rome, Cairo, or any city built on its own past.

The appendices supply the working apparatus: a risk register, a Phase 0 checklist, technical notes on light in sea air and fog, and a full bibliography. More than 120 plates, drawn from public-domain and museum sources, illustrate the argument throughout.

For architects, conservation professionals, archaeologists, planners and serious readers of Alexandria's history, The Second Sun is both the biography of a lost building and a method for every city whose past still lies beneath its feet, and beneath its sea.
