You are holding a book about a man who left almost nothing behind in writing. He wrote no book. He gave no lectures that were recorded in his lifetime. His own diaries, so far as scholars know them, hold a single word written over and over: Ram.
Maharajji is a hard subject for a biographer. No line of succession can be traced to him, and no one knows with whom he took his own early spiritual instruction. He wrote nothing but a handful of diaries. He would arrive unannounced and disappear, and he made no effort to be understood. The sources note that he never bothered to correct people who mangled his name. What he seems to have cared about, over and over, was that people were fed, that people were loved, and that the name of God was on their lips.
That is the paradox at the heart of his life. A man known across north India as a worker of wonders spent his days telling people to love everyone, serve everyone, remember God and tell the truth. If you read only the miracle stories, you will miss him. If you read only the teaching, you will wonder why so many people crossed oceans to sit with him.
This book tries to hold both. It is arranged in five parts:
• Part One: The Life. The boy, the wanderer, the householder, the builder of temples, the man at the wooden seat, and the death at Vrindavan.
• Part Two: The Evidence and the Wonders. What survives in writing, photograph and voice; how to read a miracle story; and the accounts that are best attested.
• Part Three: The Philosophy. Love everyone. Serve everyone. Remember God. Tell the truth. And what he meant by Sab Ek: all is one.
• Part Four: The Consciousness. What the tradition’s own yardsticks say about a saint, and what those who sat near him experienced.
• Part Five: The Living Legacy. The temples, the foundations, the music, the viral claims, and how to bring his teaching into an ordinary day.
You do not need to share his faith to read this book. You do not need to visit Kainchi. You need only be willing to look carefully at a life that was, by every account, unusually loving.
Maharajji’s stories are the doorway; this book is about what lies through it.
