Four years ago, Indu Dahiya's knee gave out in a semi-final, and so did her career. Now she is back in Dhanaura, a dusty Haryana village, with a bad leg, a notebook, and an auditor's habit of counting things nobody asked her to count. Her father's spare-parts shop is the only business on the street. The village girls' kabaddi team has an old coach, a borrowed minibus, and a fourteen-year-old orphan who plays like she has something to prove. The league that runs the sport has a rich patron, a glossy betting app, and a very polite way of making problems go away. It is only when Indu starts to add up the scores that she notices the margins never quite behave. The favourites keep winning by exactly the right number. The referees keep hearing something nobody else can. Some games are played on the mat. Some are played in the numbers. This one will be decided on the last raid.
