This is a short book. It was meant to be.

It is not gentle. A book that apologises for itself is asking permission, and I am not asking.

The title is an instruction, and it is the only one in here I would defend without any qualification at all. Observe everything. Absorb nothing.

It comes from an old story. When a poison threatened to destroy the world, Shiva drank it. He did not swallow it down into himself, and he did not spit it back out. He held it in his throat, which turned blue, and he stayed exactly who he was.

Swallowing what the world hands you poisons your own peace. Spitting it back out poisons everyone standing near you. There is a third option, and almost nobody takes it, because it requires holding something unpleasant without either absorbing it or passing it on.

Most of what follows is about how to do that. Some of it is about what it costs.

You will find arguments here for silence, for distance, for boundaries that do not move, and for withdrawing your attention from people who have not earned it. All of it works. None of it is cruelty, none of it is revenge, and none of it involves doing harm to a single person. If you came looking for permission to be cruel, you have the wrong book.

Observe everything. Absorb nothing.

And one warning, since I would rather give it at the start than be misread later. Much of this book argues for distance and for armour, and all of it is true. None of it is meant to be permanent. If you are reading this while you are in the worst of something, take what you need to get through it, and read Chapter 11 before you decide that this is how you are going to live.

You will not agree with all of this. Good. A book that leaves you where it found you was decoration.
