Description

On The Banks of Ganga: A Sacred Breath

Kashi does not explain itself. It waits for you to ask.

Why does the Ganga turn north at Kashi, defying the very laws that govern every other river on earth? Why do the fires at Manikarnika never go out? Why has this single stretch of riverbank drawn pilgrims, sages, and seekers for over four thousand years?

On The Banks of Ganga is a meditation on Kashi through the lens of Vedic wisdom, Puranic narrative, and lived experience. Written by two authors who read the Kashi Khanda in the original Sanskrit, walked the panchakroshi route, and sat in silence at the cremation ground, this book moves between ancient text and present-day ghat with equal seriousness.

Inside, you will find the layered legend of Manikarnika, the quiet presence of Vishnu beneath a Shaiva city, the descent of the Ganga from Shiva's own hair, and the philosophy of death, ash, and liberation that has made Kashi the place Hindus have sought out for their final breath for millennia.

This is not a comparative-religion survey, and it is not a devotional tract. It is written for three readers at once: the one who grew up with these stories but was never told their sources, the one encountering Hindu thought for the first time and wanting an entry that is neither shallow nor defensive, and the one who has already walked this path and wants a companion text.

Two voices, one book, one ancient city that has never stopped speaking.

About the Authors

Nimisha Bhatu and Shantanu Shrivastava are public health professionals and independent researchers based in India. Their academic work has addressed community health, health systems strengthening, and the social determinants of health across several Indian states.
Both have been long-standing readers of the Puranic literature of India. They have walked the sacred geography of the subcontinent across many years, and Kashi has been a shared preoccupation since an early visit in the winter of 2024, when the initial idea for this book was first discussed at the Manikarnika ghat.
This is their first book-length collaboration in the humanities. It is written as a single voice from two readers - a record of conversations held over several years on the steps of the Ganga, in the lanes of Kashi, and in the long evenings that followed.
