Revenue management is the discipline that decides, day by day, which rooms to sell to which guests at which prices through which channels. This textbook sets out that discipline for the hospitality student and the working manager, with worked examples drawn from the publicly disclosed performance of leading Indian hotel companies including IHCL, ITC Hotels, EIH, and Lemon Tree.
Across five carefully structured units, the book moves the reader from the foundational metrics of occupancy, ADR, RevPAR, and GOPPAR through the channel and distribution decisions that govern modern hotel sales, into the economics of demand under fixed perishable capacity, willingness-to-pay theory, own-price elasticity and the Lerner rule, Littlewood's two-class rule, expected marginal seat revenue (EMSR), and bid-price control. Later units cover cost-plus, competition-based, and value-based pricing, brand architecture, and the eight-step Integrated Pricing Decision framework. The final unit applies artificial intelligence to demand forecasting and dynamic pricing, including the emerging concern of tacit algorithmic collusion.
Each unit closes with practice questions of graded difficulty, suitable for classroom assessment and self-study alike. Worked numerical examples are the author's own and use disclosed performance data from listed Indian hotel companies. A complete answer key is provided.
Written for the Indian hospitality classroom and the Indian hotel industry, this is a complete companion for undergraduate students of hotel and hospitality management, front-office and revenue-management trainees, channel managers, OTA coordinators, distribution analysts, hotel general managers, hospitality educators, and independent property owners building pricing capability in-house.
