Description

What if your life, your memories, your relationships, your sense of self could be claimed by someone else with absolute certainty… and you had no way to prove them wrong?

Or worse… what if somewhere, deep down, a part of you begins to doubt your own truth!

On their way to destinations unknown, a man and a woman run into each other. As they start talking, the man, Arijit, is convinced that the woman is his estranged wife. Rupali, the woman, however, maintains that they have never met before. What follows is a bizarre journey as they explore the implications of this serendipitous encounter, where the past rears its head repeatedly while the future threatens to surge ahead.

For him, they once had a life together... For her, their paths were never the same...

In a place unknown, at a time undefined, the story will take you into this twisted story of Arijit and Rupali and force you to ask, "Is this even real?" as you witness the differing accounts of lives lived.

It is abstract yet unsettlingly specific, simple yet confoundingly complex, subtle yet brazenly bold. Do not miss this unique story, which explores relationships and marriage, individuality and freedom, betrayal and hope!

About the Authors

About the Playwright:
Shatarupa Bhattacharyya is a theatre maker, actor, writer, and academic based in Bengaluru, with over 15 years of experience in performance and storytelling. She has acted in numerous productions across Hindi, English, Dakhini, and Bundelkhandi theatre, and her practice moves fluidly between acting, directing, writing, and research.

She has directed productions such as The Anklet, Six Dead Queens, An Inflatable Henry, and the acclaimed Hindi play Silvatein. Her work is known for its feminist perspective, emotional depth, and exploration of memory, relationships, identity, and society through intimate and experimental performance forms.

Alongside her theatre practice, Shatarupa is an Assistant Professor at Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Bengaluru. She holds a PhD in Development Studies from the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), where her research examined the intersections of festivals, ecology, faith, and development in the Sundarbans. Her academic and artistic practices often intersect, creating works that bridge performance, history, politics, and lived experience.

About the Translator:
Puneet Gupta is your classic techie-turned-storyteller—only with a few unexpected plot twists and detours along the way. He fell in love with storytelling early on, but took the scenic route through an alternate reality of engineering degrees (IIT Delhi, University of Maryland) and a winding journey through the tech world before finding his way back to his true passion.

With a right brain that refuses to sit still and a heart that beats in bold italics, Puneet has spent the last three decades chasing creativity—whether through art, theatre, travel, or writing. His five years in the US, first as a student and then as a professional, turned out to be a shift in narrative, helping him find his voice as a writer drawn to slice-of-life stories, quirky poetry, and deeply human narratives about authenticity and belonging.

Born and raised in Delhi, Puneet now calls Bangalore home—the city where most of his creative dreams took flight. He has penned four plays (in both English and Hindi), a book of poetry, and numerous short stories. When Stars Fell Into My Soup is his debut novel.
