Description

You're fine. You've always been fine. That's exactly the problem.

You show up. You reply to the texts. You hit your deadlines and your workouts, you cry in the car, and you tell everyone you're fine, because you genuinely believe you are.

You learned, a long time ago, exactly which version of yourself got love. Competent. Easy. Low-maintenance. The one who never needed anything. It worked. That's the problem. It worked so well you forgot it was a performance, and now you can't find the person underneath it.
This is a book about putting that version down.

Not a five-step programme. Not a before-and-after. Just the slow, honest, occasionally undignified work of unlearning the version of yourself you were rewarded for, and coming back to the one you buried to survive.

The Slow Undoing is for the reliable one. The high achiever who is very good at meeting everyone else's needs and no longer sure which parts of themselves they chose freely. It's about the symptoms nobody names, the guilt that shows up before you've done anything wrong, the exhaustion that sleep doesn't touch, and what actually changes when you stop performing.

Inside, you'll find:

Why functioning and being fine are not the same thing, and how people go years without noticing the difference

How to say no without three reasons and an apology attached, and how to hear no without taking it personally

What rest looks like when it isn't something you have to earn first

Why guilt is an unreliable witness, and how to tell real guilt from the old alarm

A workbook, reflection prompts, and space to write, so this becomes something you do rather than something you read

Written from the other side of it. Shikha Katare spent most of her life being rewarded for a version of herself that was quietly costing her everything. She writes this not healed and finished, but far enough along to hand you the map she wishes someone had handed her.

You don't need to have read anything else first. If you've read You're Not Fine., this goes further. If you haven't, start here.

Come as you are. And this time, maybe let that be true.

About the Author

Shikha Katare is the Chief Operating Officer of a management consulting firm and an IICA-certified Independent Director, which means she has spent her career inside rooms where holding it together is the whole job. By most measures she was thriving for years: capable, driven, the person everyone could rely on. She was also, quietly, not okay, and had gotten very good at not saying so.

She writes for people who recognise themselves in that. Her work is about high-functioning burnout, the version of yourself you build to be loved, and the slow, unglamorous work of putting it down.

She is the founder of NIRVAANA, a mental health community and imprint built for exactly this conversation: honest, unperformed, and free of the pressure to arrive already healed. It's a space built by showing up exactly as she is: embracing vulnerability, celebrating growth, and reminding us that healing is rarely linear.

Her first book, You're Not Fine., was a short read on the burnout nobody names. The Slow Undoing goes further, into unlearning, rest without guilt, and coming back to yourself. She wrote it, as she puts it, "not healed and finished, just far enough along to hand you the map I wish someone had handed me."

She lives in Bangalore with her husband and her dog, Eva, where she is at work on her next book.

Come as you are.
