Rani Abbakka is the first woman freedom fighter in the country even before the times of kittur Chennama and Jhansi Rani. She was the Queen of Ullal near Mangalore in the mid-16th century. She was a bant Jain ruler of Tulunadu (Chowta ruler). Not many in India even know of her. Ullal was a strategic trading seaport that the Portuguese were eyeing. She had repulsed Portuguese attacks for many decades. The Portuguese were frustrated with her then which is evident in their accounts. She was famous then among the Arabs, the Europeans and the Ottoman Turks for resisting the Portuguese attacks. Her bravery and battles with the Portuguese have remained alive in local folklore even to this day.
