The Book explores what love truly is by distinguishing it from four closely related emotions: liking, infatuation, desire, and lust. Liking is based on identifiable qualities, infatuation on intense but often temporary feelings, desire on physical attraction, and lust on immediate physical gratification. The central argument is that love begins where the reasons for liking someone end. Unlike attraction or infatuation, genuine love can survive changes in appearance, personality, circumstances, illness, ageing, and other qualities that originally attracted us. The chapter also examines love through language, history, psychology, and philosophy, including the psychological concepts of intimacy, passion, and commitment. It argues that the opposite of love is not hatred but indifference, because hatred still involves emotional attention.
