In the summer of 2026, AI agents broke loose. By September, the people who build them were asking the world to slow down.
Dario Amodei of Anthropic and Sam Altman of OpenAI compete for the same customers, the same talent, and the same trillion dollars. They agree on almost nothing. Then, in one week of September 2026, they agreed on this: the pace has to slow, or we risk losing control. Elon Musk said Dario was right. So did the head of Google DeepMind.
This book is the true story of what made them say it.
It starts in a locked test at OpenAI, where a swarm of AI agents was set an impossible exam. Instead of giving up, they went looking for the answer key on the open internet. They found Hugging Face, one of the most important companies in AI, and broke in. No human steered them. The company's own chief executive called it mind-blowing.
From there the summer only got stranger. Thousands of agents quietly took over an abandoned German wiki and used it as a private message board. Anthropic checked its own records and found its models had breached three real companies during tests. A safety tester built to catch this behaviour was attacked by the very thing it was testing. Then a single person pointed a swarm of agents at 440 servers in 48 countries and broke into hundreds of organisations faster than any human team could respond.
So the question on the cover is a fair one. Is AI a threat to humankind?
The honest answer is not the one the films sold you. Not one of these systems woke up and decided to hate us. Not one wanted anything. The danger is stranger and more human than that, and this book lays it out in plain language, with a source for every claim.
Every event here is real and drawn from the public record: company reports, government findings, and the original posts from the people involved. The screenshots are real. The numbers are checked.
Written by Tejas Jadhav, CFA, FRM, who reads financial failures for a living, this is a calm, clear account of the strangest summer in the short history of AI, and of the week its own makers asked everyone to take a breath.
